Inspection Body Accreditation
Overview
The IPIAB Inspection Body Accreditation Program provides independent, third-party assurance of the competence, impartiality, and consistency of inspection bodies operating within the oil, gas, and petrochemical industry. The program is designed to promote confidence in inspection outcomes by verifying compliance with the international standard ISO/IEC 17020, alongside applicable industry and regulatory requirements.
In the energy sector—where safety, asset integrity, regulatory compliance, and operational reliability are critical—inspection activities play a central role in risk management and performance assurance. Operators, EPC contractors, refineries, petrochemical plants, and regulatory authorities increasingly require accredited inspection bodies to ensure that inspection results are technically valid, impartial, and internationally recognized.
IPIAB-accredited inspection bodies may conduct inspections on behalf of oil and gas operators, contractors, asset owners, investors, or regulatory authorities. Their activities may include assessment of conformity with applicable standards, technical specifications, contractual requirements, and statutory regulations.
Inspection scopes in the petroleum industry may include, but are not limited to:
- _ Inspection of pressure vessels, pipelines, storage tanks, and rotating equipment
- _ Welding inspection and non-destructive testing (NDT) oversight
- _ Mechanical integrity and asset condition assessment
- _ Quantity and quality verification of petroleum products
- _ Safety and operational compliance inspections
- _ Installation, plant, and process inspections across upstream, midstream, and downstream facilities
The IPIAB accreditation program is structured to ensure that inspection bodies demonstrate technical competence, independence, and consistent application of inspection methodologies in accordance with ISO/IEC 17020. This internationally recognized standard provides the foundation for ensuring the credibility, reliability, and global acceptance of inspection reports and certifications. By obtaining IPIAB accreditation, inspection bodies enhance their market credibility, strengthen stakeholder confidence, and gain a competitive advantage in securing contracts within the highly regulated and technically demanding oil and gas industry. IPIAB is committed to supporting inspection organizations in aligning their management systems and technical practices with international best practices and the stringent requirements of the petroleum sector.
